Add as Preferred Source on Google
The WhatsApp ecosystem extends well beyond the smartphone screen, offering dedicated solutions for desktops and web browsers. This expansion is designed to meet clear productivity needs: taking advantage of a physical keyboard, viewing documents and attachments on larger displays, or simply keeping conversations going while a phone is out of reach or charging. Users have two main options: WhatsApp Web and the dedicated WhatsApp Desktop application.
Accessing WhatsApp from a computer or browser is not an independent login but a synchronized extension of the user’s account. For both Web and Desktop versions to function properly, the smartphone must have:
- An active WhatsApp account.
- A stable internet connection (as must the secondary device).
WhatsApp Web vs. WhatsApp Desktop: the key difference
While both solutions mirror the mobile app’s interface, the Desktop version offers more robust functionality, making it the preferred choice for extended use.
- Voice calls: Available only on WhatsApp Desktop
- Video calls: Available only on WhatsApp Desktop
- Messaging and media sharing: Available on both
- Message search: Available on both
- Native notifications: Browser-dependent on Web; full system notifications on Desktop
The QR code as a security key
Access to any desktop version is protected by a fast and secure QR code–based authentication system.
1. Starting a session
- For WhatsApp Web: visit web.whatsapp.com in a browser.
- For WhatsApp Desktop: launch the dedicated application.
In both cases, a unique QR code appears on the screen.
2. Synchronizing via smartphone
The user must scan the code using WhatsApp on their phone:
- Android: Open the app → tap the three-dot menu → Linked devices → Link a device.
- iPhone: Open the app → tap Settings → Link a device.
On iPhones, the system requires authentication via PIN or biometric data (Face ID or Touch ID) before activating the camera, adding an extra layer of security. Once scanned, synchronization is nearly instantaneous.
Interface and session management
On a computer, the interface is divided into two panels: the conversation list on the left (including archived chats) and the active chat window on the right. Users can send and receive text messages, media files, voice messages, and documents.
Before completing access, it is possible to select the option to keep the session active, avoiding the need to rescan the QR code each time. To log out securely, simply open the three-dot menu on the main screen and select Log out.
WhatsApp Desktop: installation and compatibility
WhatsApp Desktop is the optimal choice for frequent use, offering greater stability along with voice and video calling features. It is compatible with Windows 8.1 and later, as well as macOS 10.10 and later.
For security reasons, the application should be downloaded only from official sources: either the WhatsApp website or authorized app stores such as the Microsoft Store or Apple’s App Store.
