Google used The Android Show 2026 to preview what may become the biggest transformation of Android in years. The focus is no longer just on apps, design updates or isolated AI tools: with Android 17, Google wants Gemini to become the operating system’s core layer, capable of understanding context, automating tasks and acting across apps with minimal user input.
Gemini Intelligence becomes the center of Android
At the center of this shift is a new platform called Gemini Intelligence, initially arriving this summer on Google Pixel 10 and Samsung Galaxy S26 devices before expanding to tablets, smartwatches, Android Auto, Wear OS products and laptops later in the year.
Google describes Gemini Intelligence as a more “agentic” form of AI. Instead of simply answering questions, Gemini will be able to complete multi-step actions between different services and apps. During the presentation, Google showed examples such as automatically adding school books to an online shopping cart, organizing grocery deliveries from a screenshot, or finding travel experiences from a photographed brochure.
The system relies heavily on computer vision and OCR technologies, allowing Gemini to understand what appears on screen and interact with it directly. Holding the power button over a shopping list, for example, could trigger Gemini to recognize the products and prepare a delivery order automatically.
Google is also pushing deeper integration between Gemini and Android apps. Through a feature called Personal Intelligence, the assistant will be able to autofill forms using data connected to the user’s Google account, always requiring explicit permission before accessing personal information.
Rambler and AI-generated widgets arrive on Android
Another major addition is Rambler, a new Gboard feature that reworks voice dictation entirely. Users can speak naturally, pause, switch languages or repeat themselves, while Gemini restructures the final message into cleaner and more coherent text in real time without storing the audio.
Android will also introduce Create My Widget, a tool that lets users generate custom widgets simply by describing them in natural language.
Alongside these AI additions, Google confirmed a broader visual redesign based on Material 3 Expressive, with interfaces designed to reduce distractions and adapt more dynamically to user behavior.
Google also introduced Pause Point, a feature designed to interrupt compulsive app usage by forcing a short pause before reopening distracting apps repeatedly.
Gemini expands into Chrome and the wider ecosystem
Gemini is expanding beyond smartphones as well. In Chrome on Android, a new Gemini panel will let users ask questions about webpages, summarize articles or extract information directly from the browser.
Google also demonstrated deeper integrations with Gmail, Google Calendar and Keep, allowing Gemini to move information between services automatically.
Quick Share is being expanded too, with broader compatibility across Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, Xiaomi, HONOR and Vivo devices. Google is also working to simplify migration from iPhone to Android, including wireless transfer of apps, passwords, messages, contacts and even eSIMs.
The company additionally announced new 3D emoji under the Noto 3D branding, alongside creator-focused upgrades for Instagram, video editing and content production on Android devices.
Android Auto receives one of its biggest updates yet
Google’s automotive ambitions are evolving in parallel. Android Auto is receiving one of its largest updates so far, with a redesigned interface, widget support, immersive 3D navigation in Google Maps and Full HD video playback when vehicles are parked.
Gemini integration is also becoming more advanced inside cars, allowing the assistant to understand conversation context and suggest actions automatically.
Google says many of these features will expand gradually throughout 2026 depending on vehicle compatibility and regional rollout schedules.
Google briefly teases Googlebook
Google also briefly teased Googlebook, a new category of Gemini-focused laptops designed around tighter AI integration and closer connectivity with Android smartphones.
The company shared very few technical details during the presentation, saying only that additional information will arrive later this year.
Android is becoming an AI-first platform
Many of the newly announced features remain limited to specific devices or regions for now, and Google has not yet clarified how widely Gemini Intelligence will expand beyond flagship hardware.
Still, the company’s direction is becoming increasingly clear: Android is no longer evolving simply as a mobile operating system, but as a broader AI platform designed to anticipate actions, connect devices and reduce the need for manual interaction altogether.
